Sungbo's Eredo, Archaeological fortification system in Ijebu Ode, Nigeria.
Sungbo's Eredo is an archaeological fortification system in Ijebu Ode made up of walls and ditches extending across a large distance. The height difference between the ditch bottom and the surrounding rim reaches about 20 meters, and the system forms a continuous ring around the ancient kingdom.
Local builders constructed this massive earthwork between 800 and 1000 AD as a ring structure around the ancient kingdom during a period of political conflict. The construction reveals the technical skill and organizational power of the people at that time.
The site carries the name of noblewoman Bilikisu Sungbo, whose burial place draws regular visits from pilgrims of different faiths. This blending of religious traditions shows how the place holds meaning across communities.
The terrain is covered in dense vegetation, so it is best to follow the designated paths when exploring the archaeological remains. Comfortable shoes and insect protection are recommended when visiting the sprawling structures.
Small cone-shaped idol statues were found at the bottom of the ditches, pointing to ritual practices of the ancient inhabitants. These discoveries offer insight into the spiritual beliefs connected to the site's protective purpose.
