Franeker, Historical university town in Friesland, Netherlands
The town spans across the northern part of the Van Harinxmakanaal waterway, featuring Renaissance architecture and traditional Frisian buildings throughout its medieval street layout.
Founded around 800 as a Carolingian stronghold, Franeker received city rights in 1417 and became the second oldest university city in the Netherlands during 1585.
The Eise Eisinga Planetarium, constructed in 1781, maintains its original wooden mechanism showing the solar system movements through an intricate ceiling display.
The central railway station connects Franeker to Leeuwarden and Harlingen, with regular train services running throughout the day from early morning until late evening.
Museum Martena occupies a fortified residence from 1502, presenting regional artifacts and documents that narrate the scientific history of the former university.
