Mergelp

Mergelp is a castle complex near Berg en Dal featuring two distinct mounds separated by dry moats that shape the landscape. The main elevation and a smaller northeastern mound together form the physical layout of this medieval fortification.

The complex was built during the Middle Ages but never fully completed, as excavations in 1975 revealed. No building remains were found on the main mound, indicating the project remained unfinished.

Dutch artist Aelbert Cuyp created a landscape painting of Ubbergen Castle in 1655, which is now exhibited at the National Gallery in London.

The site is located near the village and can be explored on foot, though facilities on-site are limited. A visit works best in dry weather since the mounds and moats can become muddy otherwise.
