Haus Wylerberg, Expressionist residential building in Berg en Dal, Netherlands.
Haus Wylerberg is a residential building with expressionist design, situated on a terrace overlooking the Nijmegen-Kleve hill ridge. The structure features angular geometric forms and multiple uneven levels that reflect its modernist approach to architecture.
Architect Otto Bartning designed this building between 1921 and 1924 for resident Marie Schuster-Hiby, who had inherited the land from her mother. After World War II, territorial changes made this originally German structure part of the Netherlands.
The name Wylerberg refers to its hilltop location with views across the surrounding landscape. Inside, a music hall provided a space where residents and visiting musicians gathered to perform and share artistic experiences together.
The building is located at Rijksstraatweg 178 in Beek-Ubbergen and now functions as a research center for bird studies. Visitors should know this is an active research facility that offers insights into scientific work and observation.
The building was originally constructed in German territory before post-war border shifts made it a Dutch monument. This unusual history of territorial change remains a distinctive part of the site's identity.
