Mount Scenery, Dormant volcano in Saba, Caribbean Netherlands
Mount Scenery is a dormant stratovolcano on Saba that rises 887 meters above sea level, while its base stretches another 900 meters below the ocean surface. The summit forms the highest point on the island, which is built entirely from andesite rock.
The volcano last erupted in 1640, producing pyroclastic flows that spread across the surrounding area. This explosive activity shaped the island landscape at the time and left traces in the rock layers.
A stone path of 1,064 handmade steps climbs from Windwardside through changing forest layers toward the summit. Locals built this route in the late 1960s, creating a passage that follows the contour of the terrain and connects the village with the highest point of the island.
Those planning the climb should wear sturdy footwear and carry enough drinking water, as the steps grow steep and the path passes through wet vegetation. The summit often sits in mist with cooler temperatures, so bringing a jacket is helpful.
Since October 10, 2010, this summit has been the highest point in the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands, following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles. The peak now stands taller than any hill or rise in the European part of the country.
