Fairy Tale Forest, Theme park attraction in Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands.
Fairy Tale Forest is a walkable collection of fairy tale scenes featuring mechanical figures, music, and effects distributed along winding paths through natural vegetation. Each scene was designed as a standalone artwork and can be explored in any order.
The forest opened in 1952 as part of Efteling amusement park with ten original fairy tale scenes designed by illustrator Anton Pieck. Since then it has been continually expanded and developed, with new scenes added and existing ones renewed.
The forest presents familiar European fairy tales through walkable scenes that visitors experience firsthand. These stories remain engaging to all ages through their physical representation.
The best time to explore is on quieter weekdays when the paths are less crowded and you can view the scenes at leisure. Comfortable shoes are essential as you will walk considerable distances on natural pathways.
The moving figures were all custom-made and often speak to visitors in multiple languages, adding an extra dimension to the experience. These personalized movements and voice elements make each scene feel like a distinct interactive moment.
