Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, Protected forest area in Utrecht, Netherlands.

Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park is a forested area with rolling hills, heathlands, and sandy sections in central Netherlands. The landscape alternates between thick woodlands, open heath areas, and stretches of sand that create varied terrain for exploration.

The land was shaped millions of years ago during an ice age when glaciers pushed sand and gravel into elevated ridges that formed the rolling terrain. This geological foundation determined what kind of forest and plant life would later develop in the region.

The region has deep roots in local settlement patterns, visible in scattered estates and traditional village cores nestled among the forests. Visitors walking through the park can encounter these traces of long-established communities and understand how people have lived within this landscape.

The park has multiple entry points around its perimeter with a network of marked trails for walking, cycling, and horseback riding. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground changes between forest, heath, and sand, and can become slippery when wet.

The area is home to over 100 bird species and provides refuge for rare mammals like European pine martens that are seldom seen elsewhere. This makes it a destination for nature watchers seeking glimpses of less common forest wildlife.
