Hoogezand, Administrative village in Midden-Groningen, Netherlands.
Hoogezand is an administrative village in the Midden-Groningen region in northeast Netherlands. The settlement spreads along both sides of the Winschoterdiep channel with residential areas and industrial zones, connected by two railway stations serving major cities.
The village began in 1618 as a peat extraction settlement along the Winschoterdiep channel. During the 19th century it transformed into an industrial center focused on shipbuilding and manufacturing.
The Nationaal Bus Museum displays historical buses from different periods of Dutch public transportation history since 2013. You can walk through and see how vehicles and passenger services changed over the decades.
The village is accessible from two railway stations: Hoogezand-Sappemeer and Martenshoek, both offering frequent trains to major destinations. The canal provides good orientation and makes exploring different neighborhoods straightforward.
The local shipbuilding industry here uses an unusual sideways launching method for vessels rather than vertical approaches. This technique distinguishes the builders for their distinctive construction practices.
