Wilhelminatoren, Observation tower on Heunsberg, Valkenburg, Netherlands
Wilhelminatoren is an observation tower standing on Heunsberg in Valkenburg, built from light-colored marl stone with four decorated stone pillars. The structure rises across seven floors with pointed steel windows and offers views across the town and surrounding landscape from its height.
The tower was designed in 1906 by architect Christiaan Alfons Prevoo for the Kurkomité Falcobergia, a group focused on promoting tourism in the area. This period marked a phase of growth and new construction projects in Valkenburg.
The tower is named after Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and represents the era in which it was built. Today visitors experience the historical architecture that shaped how the town appeared during that period.
The tower can be reached by cable car from the town center or by walking paths, depending on your preference and energy level. Once at the top, a restaurant is available for refreshments and rest before taking in the surrounding views.
On clear days, the observation deck allows visitors to see three countries at once: the Netherlands, Germany toward Aachen, and Belgium toward Liege. This makes the tower's location at the border region particularly special.
