Luxor, Arnhem, Music venue and national monument in Willemsplein, Arnhem, Netherlands
Luxor is a music and theater venue in central Arnhem, housed in a building listed as a national monument. The red brick facades carry Art Nouveau details such as decorative terracotta reliefs, lamp holders, and a symmetrical layout topped by a hipped roof.
The building was constructed in 1915 and 1916 to designs by architect Willem Diehl, and it originally served as a cinema. A major renovation in 2008 turned it into a modern music theater while keeping its historic structure intact.
The main hall keeps its original Art Nouveau details, including a barrel vault ceiling and terracotta panels arranged in a chessboard pattern on the walls. Anyone attending a concert today experiences these decorations as a living backdrop to the performance.
The venue is near Oude Stationsstraat in central Arnhem and easy to reach on foot from the city center. Programs change throughout the year, so checking what is on before you arrive is a good idea.
The granito floors and original wall tiles from 1916 were never replaced and can still be seen in their original state today. It is rare for an active venue to have kept so many of its original surfaces unchanged.
