Ito-toren, Office building in Zuidas, Netherlands
Ito-toren is a glass and aluminum office tower in Amsterdam's Zuidas financial district, with walls that lean slightly outward and horizontal rows of windows running across the facade. The building has 25 floors and four interior atria that bring natural light into the core of the structure.
Ito-toren was built between 2002 and 2005 as part of the development of the Zuidas district, a large urban project that aimed to give Amsterdam a new business center south of the old city. It was one of the first towers completed in that area, helping to set the tone for what the neighborhood would look like.
The tower was designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, and his style is clearly visible in the way the facade feels fluid despite being made of glass and aluminum. This contrast between soft form and hard material is typical of Ito's approach, and it gives the building a recognizable character among the other towers in the area.
The tower is easy to reach on foot from Amsterdam Zuid station, which is only a short walk away. The open spaces around the building let you walk around it freely and see the facade from different angles.
The aluminum panels on the facade are perforated with a fine pattern that creates shifting shadows depending on the angle of sunlight. This detail is easy to miss from a distance but becomes visible when you walk up close to the building.
