The Rock, Neo-futuristic office building in Zuidas, Netherlands.
The Rock is a 24-floor office building in the Zuidas district of Amsterdam, designed in a neo-futurist style. The facade combines aluminum, composite panels, and natural stone, organized by a series of vertical fins that run across the full height of the tower.
Completed in 2009 by Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat, the tower was built as part of the broader development of the Zuidas area, which was being transformed into a major European business hub at the time. Van Egeraat is known for his experimental approach to form, and this project stands as one of his most recognized built works in the Netherlands.
The building sits in Zuidas, one of the densest business areas in the Netherlands, surrounded by glass and steel towers from different decades. The name "The Rock" refers to the solidity and weight the structure projects, even though much of the facade is made of glass.
The building is within walking distance of Amsterdam Zuid train and metro station, making it easy to reach by public transport. As it is an active office building, access inside is limited to tenants and their guests, but the exterior facade can be viewed freely from the street.
The vertical fins on the facade are not evenly spaced and tilt at different angles, so the building looks noticeably different depending on where you stand. Walking around the full perimeter reveals a different composition of light, shadow, and material at each step.
