Loohuisbos, Natural park with forest in Aalten, Netherlands
Loohuisbos is a nature reserve near Aalten covering around 21 hectares with mixed forests, grasslands, and small water bodies. Various tree species and shrubs create habitats for birds, insects, and amphibians throughout the area.
The land was acquired in 1927 by Aalten's Belang organization and transferred to Natuurmonumenten shortly after to be preserved as a nature reserve. This early conservation effort established its role as a protected natural area that continues today.
The name refers to ancient woodland structures, and locals use the area as a recreational retreat where walking reveals the region's typical landscape character. The hedgerows and open fields show how farming shaped this land over many generations.
The area is easily accessible via parking along Haartseweg, with walking routes passing through the forest and meadows. Cycling from Aalten brings you directly to the reserve where you can explore the trails at a relaxed pace.
The land contains burial grounds from prehistoric times hidden beneath the fields, discovered and studied by archaeologists over the years. These archaeological traces make it a place where nature and human history are interwoven.
