Gemeentelijke Gasfabriek, Industrial gas plant in Utrecht, Netherlands.
Gemeentelijke Gasfabriek was an industrial plant in Utrecht that produced town gas and included buildings such as a machine hall, boiler house, and purification facilities. Three large gas holders stood alongside these structures along the Wittevroungel canal.
The plant opened in 1862 to supply town gas to Utrecht and operated until 1959. This facility replaced earlier independent gas producers and changed how residents accessed this essential fuel.
The facility includes two preserved villas: one for the director and another serving as an office building with living quarters for the supervisor.
The site sits beside the canal and offers access to green spaces that can be explored in all seasons. The location allows easy orientation and lets visitors move through the area at their own pace.
The original gas holders were converted into art pieces rather than demolished and now shape the park landscape. Their distinctive metal silhouettes tell the industrial story at this location.
