Soesterberg Air Base, Royal Netherlands Air Force military airbase
Soesterberg Air Base is a former military airfield in Soest with preserved runways, hangars, and historic buildings from different periods. The site includes a military museum with aircraft, helicopters and armored vehicles, walking trails through the former military complex, and a restaurant called Soesterdal.
The airfield was founded in 1911 by two car dealers and taken over by the Dutch military in 1913, which established a flight unit there. During World War II it was occupied by Germany and greatly expanded, later bombed by the Allies, then rebuilt after 1945 with jet aircraft and operated as a key military base until 2008.
The air base was long the center of flight training and military aviation in the Netherlands. Today, old buildings and aircraft displays show how pilots and soldiers worked here during the 20th century.
The site is now freely accessible with walking trails leading around the old runways, and a military museum housed in one of the restored buildings. Visitors can take their time exploring different parts of the grounds, as the areas are open and information boards about the history are available.
A Leopard tank weighing 60 tons stands in the museum and visitors can walk inside to imagine how it was used in combat. It is one of the largest display pieces and gives a concrete sense of what soldiers experienced in action.
