The land was originally an estate established in the mid-1500s by an aristocratic family, undergoing major changes through the 20th century. After the original manor house was demolished in 1950, the event complex was built in 1952 and operated until its closure in 2005.
The location sat centrally in the village near shops and restaurants, making visits easy to combine with other activities. Vehicle access was available, though the small surrounding streets could become crowded with buses during large events.
The Beatles performed here on June 5, 1964, a moment many visitors remembered for years afterward. This concert brought national attention to the venue and drew fans from across the region.
