Brigade Speciale Beveiligingsopdrachten, Dutch special forces
The Brigade Speciale Beveiligingsopdrachten is a specialized unit within the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, a branch of the armed forces that handles demanding security operations and law enforcement tasks. The unit performs building assaults, protects buildings and people, searches for explosives, and coordinates with police and military units when situations require it.
Established in 1975 following the Munich massacre at the Olympic Games, which prompted European nations to develop specialized response teams, the unit was modeled after Germany's GSG 9 police unit. Since its creation, it has served as a rapid response force for security threats in the Netherlands.
The unit is based at Camp New Amsterdam in Huis ter Heide, a former United States Air Force base that now operates as a secure facility with multiple layers of security. Public visits are not permitted as it functions as a closed military installation.
The unit employs specially trained dogs to locate suspects and find dangerous items such as explosives, which serves as a key element in their operations. These K9 teams provide additional support during complex missions and significantly enhance safety during their work.
