Millingerwaard

Millingerwaard is a nature reserve stretching along the Waal River with wetlands, reed beds, and flooded forests spread across the land. The area contains multiple water bodies and open spaces connected by wooden walkways and natural embankments that guide visitors through the landscape.

The area was established as a protected reserve in the 1990s and later reshaped through the introduction of livestock herds. These animals were brought in to naturally maintain the vegetation and preserve habitats for other species.

This place shows how river landscapes work, where water constantly reshapes nature and creates new patterns. Visitors can observe these natural processes happening, with sand and water moving to form new shapes across the terrain.

You can explore the area on foot or by bicycle using established paths and wooden walkways. The number of crossing points varies with river water levels, so it helps to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to adjust your route.

The reserve contains one of the Netherlands' few active river dunes where sand naturally drifts along the Waal's inner bend. There is also a tea pavilion nestled within the landscape where visitors can pause and experience the surroundings from a different angle.
