Millingerwaard, Nature reserve in Berg en Dal, Netherlands
The Millingerwaard spans 400 hectares along the Waal River, featuring marshes, reed beds, and floodplain forests with diverse water bodies throughout the landscape.
Established in 1992 under Staatsbosbeheer management, the reserve introduced Konik horses and Galloway cattle to maintain the natural balance of vegetation.
The area contains one of the Netherlands' few active river dunes, where sand naturally drifts along the Waal's inner bend, forming elevated formations.
Visitors can access the reserve by foot or bicycle, crossing water channels via dams that vary in number depending on the river's water level.
The reserve houses the Millinger Theetuin and serves as a protected habitat for beavers, tree frogs, and garlic toads introduced to enhance local biodiversity.
