Jewish cemeteries of Putte

The Jewish cemeteries of Putte comprise three separate grounds named Frechie Foundation, Machsike Hadass, and Shomre Hadass located along Noordweg and Putseweg. These extensive burial sites contain thousands of grave markers set across rural land in the region.

These burial sites were established in the early 20th century when Jewish communities from Belgium sought burial grounds in the Netherlands. Belgian law at that time did not provide sufficient legal protections for Jewish burial traditions.

These three burial grounds served different Jewish communities from Antwerp and reflect traditional burial practices visible in the grave markers throughout the sites. The layout shows how communities organized their sacred spaces according to their religious customs.

These cemeteries are generally closed to visitors with access limited to family members who must arrange permission in advance. It is best to contact ahead to understand any visiting conditions or restrictions that may apply.

The three cemeteries are large enough and distinctive in layout to remain visible from an altitude of about 10 kilometers above the landscape. This remarkable scale reflects the size of the Jewish communities from Antwerp and their burial needs over the decades.
