Doornse Gat spans across a former sand extraction site on the northern edge of the road connecting Doorn to Leersum in Utrecht province.
The location transformed from heathland at the start of the 1900s into a sand extraction facility, which operated until its conversion into a recreational area.
The nature reserve integrates into the National Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug network, offering four marked walking routes for nature exploration and outdoor activities.
