Doornse Gat, Nature area in Doorn, Netherlands
Doornse Gat is a nature area on the northern side of the road connecting Doorn and Leersum in the Utrecht region. The site developed from a former sand extraction facility and is now accessed through several marked walking trails.
The area was heathland at the start of the 20th century before it was converted to sand extraction. After industrial activity ended, the land was reshaped as a recreational space.
The area forms part of the National Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug and invites people to explore diverse habitats on foot. Visitors can observe various plant and animal species that have settled in these restored environments.
The Groene Entree information center near the main entrance provides detailed walking maps. The marked trails are well signposted and straightforward to follow.
The terrain displays distinctive geological formations created by past sand extraction. These landscape changes have resulted in a specialized environment where specific plant and animal communities thrive.
