Kromhoutkazerne, Military headquarters in Utrecht, Netherlands
Kromhoutkazerne is a military complex in Utrecht with nine office buildings arranged perpendicular to the main road. The site includes gardens, a large pond near the Kromme Rijn, and spaces for sports, meetings, and dining.
Construction began in 1913 and incorporated elements from Fort Vossegat, which was part of the New Dutch Waterline defense system. This defense line shaped regional security architecture in the 1800s.
The complex bears the name of historical fortifications and functions as a workplace for military personnel today. The arrangement of buildings creates distinct zones that connect work with outdoor spaces in a deliberate way.
The site is accessible year-round and offers plenty of space to explore different building zones. Wear appropriate footwear since there are paths through gardens and across the grounds.
The glass facades feature varied color tones inspired by traditional Dutch land division patterns found across the countryside. This subtle coloring connects modern architecture with the landscape tradition of the surrounding area.
