De Vijf Koppen, Medieval military roundel in Maastricht, Netherlands

The circular stone fortification structure features defensive walls, shooting holes, and a walkway integrated into the city's historical fortification system.

Built in 1490 as part of the Nieuwstad fortifications, the roundel received its name after five decapitated heads were displayed there in 1638.

The monument represents Dutch military engineering from the late Middle Ages and maintains protected status as a national heritage site.

Visitors can access the roundel through the city park, with restoration work scheduled between March and December 2024.

Three branches of the Jeker River converge near this fortification, which earned it an earlier name 'die Duive' in the 17th century.
