Fjellheisen, Cable car station in Tromsdalen, Norway.
Fjellheisen is a cable car system that connects Solliveien in Tromsdalen with Storsteinen mountain, rising from 50 meters to 421 meters above sea level in four minutes. The system operates daily from early morning until late evening, carrying visitors to viewing areas at the summit.
The system was established in 1961 by the shipping company Brødrene Jakobsens and reflects the maritime heritage of this polar region. After a destructive fire in 1979, the entire installation was rebuilt and updated.
The viewpoints at the top offer places where visitors can watch the midnight sun from May to July and the Northern Lights from September to April. These natural events are central to how people in this northern region experience their landscape.
The ascent takes only four minutes, making the system simple to use and requiring no special preparation. Visitors should know that views from the top are best in clear weather and that warm clothing is recommended for the mountain.
The mountain restaurant at the top was completely destroyed by fire and remained closed for 13 years before reopening as Fjellstua. Today this restaurant is a welcoming place where visitors can enjoy food and drinks after their ascent.
