Buarbreen, Glacier arm in Ullensvang Municipality, Norway
Buarbreen is a glacier arm in Ullensvang Municipality that divides into two sections on opposite sides of a mountain ridge as it descends into Buardalen valley. The ice mass feeds streams that merge into the Jordalselvi river system.
Buarbreen has changed noticeably since the 1800s, particularly after an avalanche destroyed a mountain building near Buer in 1897. The area remained important for travel despite this event and the glacier's gradual retreat over decades.
The glacier pathway represents a significant route that connects the communities of Sundal and Odda, used by locals and travelers since the 1800s.
The hiking route crosses uneven terrain and requires sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing. Visit between June and September when conditions are most favorable for walking safely on the slope.
Scientists continuously monitor this glacier to track changes in its ice mass and meltwater output. The collected data helps researchers understand long-term climate patterns in this mountain region.
