Ringedalsvatnet, Hydroelectric reservoir in Odda Municipality, Norway
Ringedalsvatnet is a hydroelectric reservoir in Ullensvang Municipality that stretches across the valley floor surrounded by steep mountain walls. The water body sits at high elevation and forms an elongated shape that follows the contours of the landscape.
A dam was built between 1910 and 1918 to harness the natural water flow in the valley. This project transformed the region into an industrial center by providing reliable power generation for manufacturing.
The reservoir supports the Norwegian industrial heritage by providing power to manufacturing facilities in the Odda region through the Tyssedal power station.
The water level changes significantly throughout the year depending on energy demands, so the shoreline appearance shifts with the seasons. Visitors should expect the surrounding landscape to look different depending on when they visit.
The reservoir modified the natural flow of several waterfalls in the surrounding mountains, permanently altering how water cascades down the slopes. This change to the landscape remains visible as a reminder of early hydroelectric development.
