Bergen National Academy of the Arts, Art school and heritage site in Bergen, Norway
The Bergen National Academy of the Arts is a public art school in the Møllendal area of Bergen, Norway, offering programs in fine arts, design, and visual communication. It is part of the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design at the University of Bergen and is housed in a modern building on Møllendalsveien.
The academy was founded in 1972 and for decades operated from several scattered buildings across Bergen. In 2017 it merged with the Grieg Academy and moved into a shared new building on the Møllendal campus.
The academy building on Møllendalsveien houses open studios and shared spaces where students from many countries work side by side. Student shows and open presentations take place throughout the year and are often open to anyone passing by.
The building is in Møllendal, a short walk or bus ride from central Bergen, and is straightforward to find on foot. Checking in advance whether a student show or open event is on will help you make the most of your visit.
The Snøhetta-designed building shares its campus with the Grieg Academy for music, meaning that visual art and music making happen side by side in the same complex. Sounds from music rehearsal rooms sometimes drift into the corridors used by visual art students.
