The name Ålmåjalosjiegŋa in Lule Sami language shows the deep connection between this glacier and the indigenous peoples of northern Scandinavia. Local Sami communities have understood this place as part of their cultural landscape for many generations.
Visiting requires a demanding trek from Straumklumpen with navigation tools and proper winter gear essential for safety. Expect rough terrain and changing conditions, so check current weather and snow status before heading out.
Three outlet glaciers flow from the main ice cap and together feed hydropower networks on both sides of the border. This ice system is one of few cross-border glacier complexes in Scandinavia that still actively contribute to electricity generation.
