Sulitjelmaisen

Sulitjelmaisen is a glacier that stretches across the Sulitjelma massif between Norway and Sweden, spanning different elevations across both nations. The ice field covers a large area and connects the two countries through this natural geographical feature.

Researchers from Stockholm University have documented the glacier's continuous changes and provide important data about climate patterns in northern Scandinavia. These long-term measurements reveal how climate shifts affect glacial regions across the area.

The glacier carries multiple names across the region: Sulitjelmaisen in Norwegian, Sállajiegŋa in Lule Sami language, and Salajekna in Swedish. These names reflect the different communities who have inhabited and shaped this northern landscape over time.

Access to the area can be challenging and requires good preparation and proper equipment for alpine conditions. Visitors should know that automatic weather stations near the glacier collect data and the area is monitored by researchers.

The glacier functions as a natural dam, creating the Låmivatnet lake through meltwater and runoff at its terminus. This interplay between ice and water creates a landscape that constantly shifts through natural processes.
