Lodalskåpa, Mountain summit in Stryn Municipality, Norway
Lodalskåpa is a mountain summit in Stryn and Luster, Norway, rising 2,083 meters above sea level and standing as the highest point on Jostedalsbreen. The peak emerges through continental Europe's largest glacier, creating a striking rocky island surrounded entirely by ice.
The first documented ascent took place in 1820 when Gottfried Bohr led an expedition to the summit. This early climb marked an important moment in the exploration of the region's glaciers.
The name combines Lodalen, meaning meadow valley, with kåpe, meaning coat, referring to the glacier covering the peak. Walking across the ice, you notice how the exposed rock rises distinctly from the surrounding white expanse.
The standard route begins at Bødalsæter and crosses the Bohrsbreen glacier before reaching the southwest ridge. Plan on glacier walking experience and proper ice travel equipment for safety on the ice field.
The peak is a nunatak, emerging directly through the ice field with a prominence of 760 meters from surrounding terrain. This geological feature makes it a rare formation rising above one of Europe's largest glaciers.
