Nigardsbreen, Glacier in Luster Municipality, Norway
Nigardsbreen is a glacier that branches from the larger Jostedal Glacier and descends to about 300 meters (1000 ft) above sea level. Its ice tongue displays intense blue colors and is surrounded by meltwater lakes and moraines.
The glacier has carved the Jostedalen valley over thousands of years through its movement and continuous meltwater flow. This slow geological process created the steep walls and deep basins visible today.
The landscape inspired Norwegian artists in the 19th century to capture its dramatic frozen forms in paintings. This artistic interest shows how deeply the place shaped the imagination of that era.
The Breheimsenteret visitor center provides access to the glacier through guided walks and boat trips across the meltwater lake. The best time to visit is from June to September when most paths and boat services are available.
The meltwater feeds into the region's power generation system and provides renewable energy for local communities. This connection shows how the glacier remains tied to Norway's modern energy needs.
