Tyholttårnet, Radio tower in Trondheim, Norway
Tyholttårnet is a radio tower in Trondheim that rises 124 meters from the city's highest point, functioning as a telecommunications center. The structure houses a rotating restaurant with a twelve-sided glass exterior at approximately 74 meters high and an observation deck near the top.
The tower was designed by architect Nils Christian Ottesen and opened in 1985 as a broadcasting facility for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. It reflected Norway's technological capabilities at that time and became an important part of the city's infrastructure.
The tower serves as a familiar landmark that locals and visitors use to orient themselves within the city. From this vantage point, you can see how the surrounding hills shape Trondheim's layout and character.
Access is best reached on foot since the tower sits at elevation. The restaurant and observation deck are located in the upper sections, offering different experiences depending on whether you want to dine or focus on the views.
The restaurant rotates slowly on its axis, allowing diners to see all sides of the city during their meal without leaving their table. This rotating function was a remarkable technical feature when the building opened.
