Norwegian Museum of Contemporary Art, Contemporary art museum in Sentrum, Oslo, Norway
The Norwegian Museum of Contemporary Art was an art museum in Oslo that displayed a collection of around 5,000 works created from 1945 onwards. The collection included paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations, and video art arranged across two floors.
The museum was established in 1988 and opened in 1990 in the former Norges Bank building. In 2017, it moved its collection to the new National Museum, where contemporary works continue to be displayed.
The institution displayed works by contemporary artists from Norway and around the world, reflecting modern artistic movements and how societies were changing. Rotating exhibitions showed how artists responded to their times through different mediums and styles.
The museum's collection is now accessible at the new National Museum, which opened in 2022 and was designed specifically for contemporary art exhibitions. No special requirements are needed to visit, and the works are available for all to see.
The building that housed the museum was designed in 1906 by Magnus Olsen Hjorth and originally served as the headquarters of Norges Bank. The main gallery was located in the former bank hall on the ground floor, transforming the grand interior of the old financial institution into a space for art.
