Retterstedet på Akershus festning, Execution site at Akershus Fortress, Norway
The execution site at Akershus Fortress is a memorial location for 42 Norwegian resistance members whose names are listed on a commemorative plaque. The site is located within the fortress courtyard and is marked by simple, dignified structures.
German occupation forces carried out three rounds of executions at this location between February and March 1945, targeting primarily members of the Milorg resistance organization. These executions were among the final war crimes committed during the occupation of Norway.
The site displays an inscription reading 'They fought they fell they gave us all' that commemorates Norwegian patriots who died during the occupation. Visitors can see how the memorial continues to serve as a place of remembrance for those who resisted the enemy.
The memorial is located close to the Norwegian Resistance Museum, making it easy to explore both sites during a single visit to the fortress. The site is freely accessible year-round and requires no special admission.
Historical records show that a few German soldiers were also executed at the fortress, having been condemned for desertion from their units. However, their names do not appear on any of the memorial plaques at this location.
