Old Bishop's Palace in Oslo, Medieval episcopal palace ruins in Gamlebyen, Norway
The Old Bishop's Palace features stone walls and architectural elements from different periods, reflecting changes in Norwegian building techniques through centuries.
Nicholas Arnesson initiated the construction of this stone palace around 1210, replacing an earlier wooden structure that served as the bishop's residence.
The palace functioned as a center of religious authority where significant decisions about church governance and community matters were made.
Visitors can examine the remaining medieval foundations and later additions at the site, which now houses the Oslo Ladegård museum.
A wooden bridge once connected the palace tower to Hallvards Cathedral, creating an integrated religious complex in medieval Oslo.
