Grenaderen, Historical ski trail site between Hakadal and Asker, Norway
The Grenaderen is a cross-country ski trail that runs approximately 90 kilometers between Hakadal and Asker across rolling forested terrain. The route connects several stations where skiers can rest and refuel along the way, including Kikutstua, Storflatan, Lovlia, Kleivstua, and Sandungen.
The trail is named after an event in 1716 when a French-speaking grenadier skied through enemy territory during the Great Northern War to deliver crucial military intelligence. His journey became a defining moment in the conflict.
The Grenaderen honors a soldier who risked his life carrying military information during wartime in the early 1700s. This story remains woven into how Norwegians view skiing and winter as central to their heritage.
The trail is accessible from multiple points and features rest stations with basic facilities along the way. Visitors should prepare for winter conditions and allow plenty of time to complete the full distance.
The original messenger completed the entire route in a single skiing session without stopping, demonstrating extraordinary physical endurance during wartime. The annual race commemorates this feat by challenging modern skiers to test their own limits.
