Eg Sykehus

Eg Sykehus is a medical complex located in the northern Eg neighborhood between the Otra river and Baneheia park. The facility operates specialized departments for psychiatry, addiction treatment, and general medicine serving southern Norway.

The facility was founded in October 1881 as one of Norway's first psychiatric institutions. Architect Ole Falck Ebbell designed the building according to medical standards of that era.

The complex displays Norwegian architectural traditions through its preserved structural details from the founding era. These original elements reflect how medical institutions were built during that period.

The complex is easily reached by public transportation in the northern part of the city. Keep in mind that it remains an active medical facility where some areas may have restricted access.

During 19th-century cholera outbreaks, the facility implemented quarantine measures that significantly lowered mortality compared to nearby areas. These early protective measures proved effective in controlling disease spread.
