Lake Lanao, Freshwater lake in Lanao del Sur, Philippines
Lake Lanao is a large freshwater lake located in Lanao del Sur, sitting at 700 meters elevation above sea level. Covering around 340 square kilometers, it is the largest lake on Mindanao and the second largest in the entire country.
The lake formed through tectonic and volcanic activity that created a natural barrier between mountain ranges over time. These geological processes allowed water to accumulate and create the deep body of water that exists today.
The Maranao people, whose name means 'people of the lake,' have lived around and depended on this water for generations, shaping their customs and way of life. Their connection to the lake remains visible today through fishing practices and settlement patterns along the shore.
The lake feeds the Agus River system, which powers several hydroelectric plants that supply much of the electrical power for the Mindanao region. Visitors should be aware that the infrastructure and daily operations around the lake are closely tied to this power generation system.
The lake once contained seventeen fish species from the genus Barbodes found nowhere else in the world, representing an extraordinary collection in a single body of water. This exceptional diversity of fish life attracted scientific attention and made the lake a notable place for biological study.
