Bacoor, Administrative division in Cavite, Philippines
Bacoor is a city in Cavite province on Luzon island, located about 15 kilometers southwest of Manila along the shore of Bacoor Bay. The city is made up of 73 barangays and borders Las Piñas to the north, Muntinlupa to the east, and Kawit to the west.
On February 17, 1897, the Battle of Zapote Bridge took place here, when Philippine revolutionaries pushed back Spanish colonial forces. This victory became a turning point in the fight for independence and encouraged the movement across the region.
The name comes from Tagalog and means mangrove swamp, a reference to the natural landscape that once lined the coast. Today, street vendors selling kakanin, small sticky rice cakes, appear on many corners and prepare these popular snacks fresh throughout the day.
Jeepneys, buses, and tricycles connect all neighborhoods and run to neighboring cities as well. Visitors moving through residential areas or along the coastal road will find small shops, markets, and food stalls open daily.
A plebiscite held in June 2012 converted the municipality into an independent component city. Since then, it operates under its own charter and can make local decisions without provincial oversight.
