West Visayas State University, University at the Philippines
West Visayas State University is a public university in Iloilo City, on the island of Panay, with its main campus near the city center and several other campuses across the region. The grounds include teaching buildings, a library, and facilities for health sciences, agriculture, arts, and business programs.
The university was founded in 1902 as part of the Philippine normal school system, with the goal of training teachers. It was damaged during World War II and later rebuilt, after which it gradually added new fields of study beyond teacher education.
The campus is a busy meeting point where students from across the Philippines gather for classes and events. Sports competitions, art shows, and local festivals are a regular part of life on the grounds.
The main campus sits close to downtown Iloilo City and can be reached by public transport or on foot from nearby areas. Once inside, the buildings are spread across a walkable area and easy to move between on foot.
The campus is home to Mari-it, one of the largest breeding facilities for hornbills in the world, where research and conservation work on these birds takes place. Visitors can see the hornbills up close, which makes a walk through this part of the grounds unlike most university visits.
