Owińska, Village in Poznań County, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland
Owińska is a village in Poznań County that stretches along the Warta River and sits within a landscape of farmland and forests in northern Greater Poland. The settlement's character is shaped by its riverside location and the agricultural surroundings that define the area.
The village developed as a settlement along the Warta River and was later shaped by the establishment of a Cistercian convent that became an important center in the region. During World War II, the place suffered tremendously when a psychiatric hospital was used by Nazi forces as a site of mass killings.
The former Cistercian convent building dominates the village as its main architectural landmark and now serves as a school for visually impaired students. This institution shapes the daily character of the place and its connection to the wider community.
The village sits about 12 kilometers north of Poznań and connects to larger cities through regular train services on the Poznań-Wągrowiec railway line. Visitors can reach the place easily by using these scheduled trains that link the area to the broader transport network.
The nearby forest holds 28 marked mass graves that preserve the memory of victims from the hospital killings during German occupation. These memorial sites stand as quiet witnesses to a tragic past and remain important for understanding what took place during that period.
