Royal Castle, Poznań, Royal castle on Przemysl Hill, Poznań, Poland
The Royal Castle is a fortress on a hill in Poznań's old town with red brick walls and Romanesque architectural features. The tower, roughly 43 meters tall, stands above the surrounding buildings and overlooks the city.
The castle was founded in 1249 when a duke chose Poznań as his seat of power and built the first fortified residence. Over centuries it suffered damage and destruction until a complete reconstruction restored its medieval form.
The courtyard and rooms show how rulers and their courts lived and worked in this space. The layout tells visitors about medieval traditions and the power that centered here.
A museum inside the castle displays historical collections across multiple levels and provides access to the tower for views over the city. Visitors should be prepared for stairs and uneven floors, especially when exploring the upper areas.
After severe wartime destruction, the castle underwent complete reconstruction from 2010 to 2016, returning to its medieval form. This extensive restoration used archaeological research and traditional craftsmanship to recreate the original.
