Fort Winiary, Military fortress in Osiedle Stare Winogrady, Poznań, Poland.

Fort Winiary is a military fortress in Poznań built from brick with an extensive layout spanning a large area. The structure is protected by earthen ramparts and contains multiple ammunition magazines, barracks areas, and underground passages that reveal its strategic design.

Construction began in 1828 during Prussian rule as part of a modern defensive system meant to protect Poznań from military threats. The fortress was designed according to contemporary warfare concepts and saw strategic importance throughout the 1800s.

The name refers to the vineyards that once flourished in this neighborhood, connecting the fortress to Poznań's agricultural past. Visitors walking through the grounds today can sense how military and civilian life overlapped in this part of the city.

The site is best explored in good weather since many areas are outdoors and paths vary in condition. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and visitors should allow plenty of time to walk through all sections at a comfortable pace.

The fortress employed multiple layers of defense, allowing defenders to continue fighting even after enemies breached the outer walls. This nested approach to military design was an innovative solution for protecting against the weapons of the time.
