Zachęta, Arts centre in Warsaw, Poland
Zachęta is an arts centre in a historic building in central Warsaw that spans several floors with spacious exhibition rooms. The halls connect through wide staircases and provide enough space for large installations and temporary shows.
The building opened its doors in 1900 as the headquarters of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts. Rebuilt after war damage, the institution developed into the main address for contemporary art in Poland.
The name comes from the Polish word for encouragement and reflects the original mission to support local artists. Today visitors gather in the main hall beneath high ceilings where rotating exhibitions of contemporary works bring life to the space.
The gallery opens afternoons and evenings from Tuesday to Sunday, with free entry on Thursdays. Guided tours run regularly and help visitors understand the rotating exhibitions better.
Since 2013 conferences on cultural education take place here, bringing together art professionals and educators. These programs offer workshops and discussions about teaching methods in contemporary art.
