Chojnik Castle, Medieval castle in Jelenia Góra, Poland
Chojnik Castle is a stone fortress perched at 627 meters above sea level on Chojnik Mountain, displaying Gothic architectural elements with defensive walls and towers. The ruins remain a prominent feature of the surrounding landscape.
Duke Bolko I built this fortress in 1292 to defend the borders of the Duchy of Jawor against threats from Bohemia. A lightning strike in 1675 severely damaged the structure and marked a turning point in its history.
The chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine and Saint George sits within the fortress walls, showing how worship was woven into daily castle life. Visitors can still see the remnants of this sacred space today.
The castle is reached via marked hiking trails from the Sobieszów district, which takes about an hour from the starting point. Sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness are essential, as the climb is steep and rocky in places.
After the 1675 lightning strike, the fortress was deliberately left as ruins rather than rebuilt, becoming a romantic symbol of the region. This choice attracted painters and wanderers who found beauty in its decayed stone walls.
