Old Market Square, Historic medieval square in Poznań, Poland
The Old Market Square is the heart of Poznań, a large plaza with a geometric layout surrounded by buildings from different architectural periods. The Renaissance Town Hall stands at its center, with streets radiating outward from each side of the square.
The square was founded in 1253 when the ducal seat moved to the left bank of the Warta River, establishing a new marketplace. Over the centuries the plaza was rebuilt and expanded multiple times to serve the growing economic needs of the city.
The Renaissance Town Hall with its distinctive gables dominates the square and reflects the power of guilds and merchants who shaped daily life here. The surrounding merchant houses with their varied façades tell the story of different periods and architectural styles layered over centuries.
The square contains restaurants, cafes, museums, and a visitor information center where you can learn about the city. It serves as a central meeting point from which you can easily explore the old town on foot.
Four fountains with mythological figures mark the corners of the square, including Neptune, Mars, and Apollo. These statues are easy to overlook but add an artistic layer to the plaza's history.
