National road 8, national road in Poland
National road 8 is a GP-class national road in Poland that runs from the Czech border in the southwest to the northeastern edge of the country near the Lithuanian border. It crosses five voivodeships and connects major cities such as Wrocław, Łódź, and Warsaw along the way.
The route was laid out in the late 20th century as part of Poland's national road network, partly following older trade and travel corridors that had been used for generations. Over the following decades, several sections were widened or replaced by faster expressways to handle increasing traffic.
Along the road, travelers pass through village centers where local markets, small shops, and roadside stalls are part of everyday life. The stretch between Łódź and Warsaw shows a clear contrast between open farmland and the growing suburbs of a large city.
The road is signposted throughout and generally well maintained, though sections passing through larger cities can be congested during peak hours. Drivers covering longer stretches will find regular stops with cafes, fuel, and rest areas spaced along the route.
The road starts in Kudowa-Zdrój, a spa town right at the Czech border, and ends in Raczki close to the Lithuanian border. This makes it one of the few Polish national roads that cross the entire country from one EU external border to another.
