St. Mary's Basilica in Gdańsk, Gothic Catholic basilica in Main Town, Gdańsk, Poland.
St. Mary's Basilica is a Catholic house of prayer built from red brick in the Main Town core of Gdańsk, its body stretching over a hundred meters. The massive western tower dominates the silhouette while slender corner towers flank the facade.
Construction began in 1343 under the direction of Heinrich Ungeradin and stretched across a century and a half until 1502. The building was heavily damaged during World War II and rebuilt in the decades that followed.
The interior houses a 15th-century astronomical clock considered a masterpiece of late medieval engineering. Numerous tombstones remember merchants and craftspeople who shaped the life of the city.
The building opens daily from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM and offers regular Catholic services as well as guided tours. Visitors can climb the tower for a view over the old town.
The building ranks among the three largest brick structures worldwide and provides space for up to 25,000 people. An astronomical clock from 1470 still displays the movements of celestial bodies today.
