Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa is a major road spanning over 30 kilometers that connects six cities across the Silesian region, including Gliwice, Zabrze, Ruda Śląska, Świętochłowice, Chorzów, and Katowice. The road features at least three lanes in each direction, multiple overpasses, bridges, and a tunnel section beneath a roundabout to maintain smooth traffic flow through urban areas.
Construction began in 1986 and progressed with support from the European Investment Bank during the 1990s to create this major urban corridor. The project was completed in 2016 and represents the largest road construction effort undertaken by local authorities in Poland, funded jointly by the national government, regional authorities, and city governments along the route.
The road is well-marked with clear signage guiding drivers to different neighborhoods and destinations in each city, with multiple exit points along its length. Heavy traffic occurs during rush hours, so traveling at off-peak times is advisable, and winter conditions require caution as regular maintenance is performed on snow and ice.
A remarkable section in Katowice passes beneath a roundabout as a tunnel, keeping the surface clear for pedestrians and local traffic while maintaining the main road flow below.
