Gmina Niedźwiedź, Rural municipality in Limanowa County, Poland.
Gmina Niedźwiedź is a rural municipality in Limanowa County, in the southern part of the Lesser Poland region. It covers several villages spread across the forested hills of the Western Beskid mountains, with the village of Niedźwiedź serving as its administrative center.
The area has been inhabited since at least the medieval period, when villages began to form along the valleys of the Beskid range. The municipality took its current administrative shape after the local government reforms of the late 20th century.
The village of Niedźwiedź, which gives this area its name, sits in a part of the Beskid mountains where Gorals, the highland people of southern Poland, have kept their own way of life. Wooden houses, folk music, and local festivals are still part of everyday life here.
Having a car is the most convenient way to move between the villages, as public transport connections within the municipality are limited. The village of Niedźwiedź is a natural starting point, with the municipal office there able to help with local information.
The name Niedźwiedź simply means "bear" in Polish, pointing to the wildlife that once roamed these Carpathian forests. Brown bears still live in the surrounding mountains, making this one of the few parts of Poland where spotting one in the wild is a real possibility.
