Brochów, Masovian Voivodeship

Brochów, Masovian Voivodeship, Fortified church village in Sochaczew County, Poland

Brochów is a village in Sochaczew County within the Masovian region, characterized by open farmland and traditional rural buildings. At its center stands the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist, a fortified church with thick stone walls that dominate the flat countryside landscape.

The church was built during the 16th century as a fortified structure serving both religious and defensive needs of the local population. The site gained further importance in 1806 when it hosted the wedding of Nicolas Chopin and Justyna Krzyżanowska.

The Basilica of Saint John the Baptist displays a blend of fortification and worship space, with thick walls and defensive features that tell how rural communities used churches for protection. The building's form shows practical thinking about safety in medieval countryside life.

The village is situated about 11 kilometers north of Sochaczew and roughly 52 kilometers west of Warsaw, making it reachable for day trips from the capital. The church serves as the main reason to visit, though visitors should allow time to walk around and see the surrounding countryside.

On September 15, 1939, the 17th Greater Poland Uhlan Regiment executed a cavalry charge against German infantry positions near the village, an event that remains part of local memory. This action represents one of many desperate moments of resistance at the war's beginning.
